Shamayim

The ancient land of Shamayim was wrought by El the ever-fair, together with his favoured son, Yeshua Gentle-Hands and their beloved wisest counsellor: a man called Ruach Breath-of-El. And ne'er were three such faithful friends and ne'er did three agree so well -- that aided one must aid them all. Thus prospered wondrous Shamayim. The people built a throne for El of golden bough and silver limb with crystal lilies trailing down, all glowing in his brilliance. They sang and danced and played for him and reveled in his radiance. Yeshua sat at his right hand and 'twixt them oft was Ruach found. Yet many times he wandered out towards Shamayim's f

Moving Up

“Welcome to the family.” That should have been Julia’s first red flag. No business that called itself a family turned out to be a good one. But the job paid well and she needed work, so she smiled and shook the interviewer’s hand. It was hot and felt like wax. That should have been her second red flag. When she stepped off the elevator on her first day, all her coworkers rushed up to greet her. “We’re so happy to have you on the team!” “Come see your desk. It’s in a great spot.” “Do you like fruit? We got you a gift basket.” Julie’s new coworkers whisked her to her new desk. They hadn’t lied. The desk was in a good spot, near the bathroom and the breakroom. Her desk was dominated by the biggest fruit basket she had ever seen in her life, festooned with ribbons that said “Welcome!” in big, friendly letters. The rest of her shift was spent learning names, trading phone numbers and social media contacts, and touring everyone else’s

Vignette: Kim

A tortoise-shelled cat prowled the rainy streets of London. At twelve years old, Kim was hardly young, but she'd seen the city change fast. The rain dampened the constant smog and soot, but it could not hide the whirr of machines day and night. Endless industry, endless profit, endless coughing from her girl. Her girl, who Kim loved almost as much as herself. Her girl, who gave Kim scraps even when she had little to eat herself. The mother and father were kind in their own ways, and Kim would affectionately rub her head against them and purr, but her girl was the one she adored. Now her girl was sick, and Kim had to repay the kindness that had been shown to her. It meant she had to venture beyond her territory, but Kim feared none of the stray cats that lurked in the alleyways. Arching her back and hissing was all she needed for most of them to leave her alone. When one arrogant tom dared approach her despite her warnings, she pounced, claws out. They tumbled together for a moment

Passing of the Doll House

This is a FFM challenge and a response to The Dolls' House by *ThornyEnglishRose. There is a link in the artist description and I recommend reading that first. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After three sons and seven grandsons, I had come to think the doll house was not meant to be my family's heirloom. I knew the boys wouldn't appreciate or embrace its quiet magic. My boys spent their younger years sprawled out in the dirt with toy cars and little green army men pretending they were soldiers in some gruesome war. Their sons were skateboarders and video gamers. The closest they came to dolls were a few action figures that threw ninj

What Need Have I of a Husband?

The first son of the king was born when the king's three daughters were twelve, eighteen, and twenty, after a long string of miscarriages, childhood illnesses, and general bad luck. He was healthy and smiling, and no one doubted that the king finally had his heir. The king's first daughter, Penelope, was already married to a leader of an island nation. The king's third daughter, Sibylla, was too young to marry. The middle daughter, Chloe, was just old enough for men to come calling, and call they had, but after a year of her brother's life, she came to her parents with a request. "Don't make me marry," she said to her father and her mother
