I fell in love with a boy
on the seven twenty-seven
from Wimbledon to Harpenden.
We met there once a week -
always the same train -
and I watched with bleeding heart
as he destroyed his life before my eyes.

And one day he was gone.
He left me not knowing
whether the boy I loved had truly died.
I cried for him,
and I clung to my belief
that there was a way he could come back.
But how could I know?

No one ever told me
exactly what happened to him;
only that he was in a bad place,
and I’m afraid it was implied
that he wasn’t coming back.
So perhaps it’s better that I can still hope,
and never really know.

You know how I absolutely love Junk (published in the US as Smack) by Melvin Burgess? Perhaps you don't, if you’re not an avid watcher. Well, either way, here's my response to that novel in the form of a poem, for ^lovetodeviate's first contest in honour of Poetry Writing Month: [link] (Tar, for anyone who doesn’t know, is the name of one of the central characters. Oh, oh it broke my heart, what happened to him! :cries:)

What if someone who wanted to read the book accidentally read the spoiler? And anyway, it'd spoil it for you - because you are going to read the book, aren't you?

To be honest, quite a lot of things happen to him and it's hard to explain exactly why it broke my heart. You need to feel it.

I obviously need to read this book. I love the almost happiness at the end. I don't know what to call it really, so I'll just hope you know what I mean.

I think I know what you mean. I only hope that, after encouraging all these people to read the book, it isn't a huge let-down!

I love this perspective. Makes me sad all over again about Tar.

I hate to break this to you, but being a coward is not a legitimate career.
